LMP Calls On Orbán To Reject US-EU Trade Pact
Hungary’s opposition LMP party has called on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to declare that he does not support the TTIP trade agreement between the European Union and the United States. Péter Ungár, a party spokesman, said that the putative free-trade agreement had been dead in the water since the very beginning and was against Hungarian interests.

Ungár was speaking in connection with a recent comment by Sigmar Gabriel, Germany’s vice chancellor, who said that TTIP talks had essentially stalled because Europeans did not want to accede to American demands. Ungár said American dumping would “flood our continent” to the detriment of Hungarian farmers.

The agreement, meanwhile, would ruin the country’s environmental safeguards and violate its legal sovereignty, given that national parliaments would be overridden by “private offshore courts” on disputed economic matters.
