The vast majority of young Hungarians believe that corruption pervades domestic public life, József Péter Martin, executive director of Transparency International Magyarország told reporters, presenting the results of a survey conducted by his organisation at an event held at the Sziget festival.

The culture of corruption can be changed if it is countered strongly and systematically and “if we do not shirk from the efforts that are needed to raise awareness about transparency and accountability”, US ambassador to Hungary Colleen Bell argued at the Friday afternoon event.

Martin reported that according to the survey conducted among those aged 18-29, 80% view corruption as a grave problem, and more than half of them believe that every politician is corrupt. But 84% also indicated that this must not be allowed to continue.

More than two-thirds of the respondents say that those who are corrupt have better opportunities in life than those who refrain from engaging in abuse. Some 84% of the respondents identify suspicious property dealings of politicians with corruption, while 75% believe that if family members and companies friendly to decision-makers win state commissions it is the result of corruption.
