Socialists To Submit Bill To Raise Mandatory Schooling Age To 18
Socialist lawmakers will submit a bill to parliament on raising the mandatory schooling age from 16 back to 18. Ágnes Kunhalmi, deputy head of parliament’s cultural committee, said the principle of “zero tolerance” should be pursued against “functional illiteracy”.

If the schooling age is not raised, severely disadvantaged children or special needs children will end up in the fostered work schemes or worse, in the world of crime.

“No adult education or training can make up for the years lost in formal education,” she insisted. Kunhalmi said that since 2011 some 40,000 children had dropped out of school because of the lowered mandatory schooling age.
