In Hungary, the festive menu has been the same for centuries. Same dishes vary from year to year on the table: broth, fish, stuffed cabbage and beigli. In terms of Christmas desserts beigli is the leader followed by gingerbread, vanilla crescent and gerbeaud. It is really impossible to imagine the Hungarian Christmas table to be left without a poppy seed or walnut beigli.

In addition to these versions there are also chocolate, marzipan, plum, apple and cottage cheese flavours as well. Some people vote for beigli with raisins, others think the plain one is the best. In any case, if you want to be sure, choose the classic flavours.

It’s hard to find a good and authentic beigli, though. But there is no doubt that Gerbeaud’s beigli is a good choice and additionally it is packaged beautifully in paper boxes. And the good news is that you can also find it in Émile’s so you won’t have to travel across Budapest in the Christmas crowd to get some. We told you!
