Foreign Minister Accuses Austrian Chancellor Of Trying To Divide V4 Countries
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó on Thursday accused Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern of attempting to sow division among the Visegrad Four countries. Szijjártó responded to an interview Kern gave to German business daily Handelsblatt in which he said that recent talks with Czech and Slovak officials had given him the impression that the V4 was divided.
Kern said the Czech Republic and Slovakia did not see eye to eye with Hungary and Poland. He said in a statement that the Hungarian government “had noticed long ago” that certain western European politicians were trying to create divisions among the V4. “But we have bad news for them: it’s not going to work,” Szijjártó said. “The Visegrad Group is the closest and most effective alliance within the European Union and it will stay that way whether the Austrian chancellor likes it or not.” He said Kern’s “frustration” was “understandable looking at the domestic political situation in Austria”. “But it would be nice if he left us out of the Austrian election campaign.” Republished with permission of Hungary Matters, MTI’s daily newsletter.
