'The Nutcracker', Festival Theatre Budapest, 22 December
The Nutcracker, the ballet version of the most popular fairy tale of all time, is able to enchant each new generation and engage them in thought: they can simply enjoy its visual world or be compelled to believe that, in order to find happiness, everything has a soul, and every object has a fate. The belief of children changes the world, and adults can learn from them: one must feel, not just see.

The prisoner of a wicked curse, unhappily locked in the body of an ugly wooden doll. In this colourfully painted figure, a little girl detects the feeling, sentient soul within and will stop at nothing to break the curse.

Wicked mice and all kinds of toy characters come to life, with the little girl's belief giving them the power to fight their battles. Because the little girl is absolutely sure that the world that we see with our eyes is not the only one that exists, even if the adults are not willing to acknowledge this other reality.

The fable now comes to life in a new version that honours the classic one by bringing it closer to the modern era. Both parents and children, and ballet fans and newcomers to the art form alike, will all get the chance to marvel at what secrets might be lurking in the depths of our everyday world.

This revival of The Nutcracker has been made possible with the support of the National Cultural Fund.
