UK Ambassador Iain Lindsay @ TEDxBudapest, 12 June
Are you a rational thinker? Do you always and consistently make the best possible decision? Are you sure?

What do we consider irrational? Normally things that differ, that are out of line, erroneous or even insane. Being able to adapt to new situations, trust others, go the extra mile and love unconditionally – we can thank these irrational decisions for making us all happy in the end.

Come and join us in our research on the paradoxical beauty of our human nature at this year’s TEDxBudapest on 12 June, 2018.

Presentations by:

Nick Thorpe is a British writer and journalist, the BBC Central Europe Correspondent. In his talk he asks questions like: what compels people to leave their homes and set out on uncertain roads, in the hope of a better life?

Iain Lindsay has been the British Ambassador to Hungary since March 2016.  His TEDx talk will focus on the role of diversity through his life and career, and how it may help to challenge and overcome individuals’ irrational fears and assumptions, and ultimately enrich societies.

Anna Réz is a moral philosopher at Eötvös Loránd University. In her TEDx talk she will focus on how much rationality is required from human beings to maintain the basic moral concepts as we know them.

Zoltán Baracskai thinks, writes and teaches about decision makers’ mindset. He is experiencing the struggle of the analytical and intuitive mind firsthand. They may stay like this: neither will eradicate the other?!

Zsuzsanna Szvetelszky is a social psychologist, gossip researcher. In her talk she goes after the mystery: who is the one really making the decision, when we think we do.

Balázs Simonyi, film director, creative. His latest work, ULTRA was the most viewed documentary in Hungary in 2017. He will talk about the logic and irrationality behind the long distance runner’s choices and decisions and the inner processes.

Special Guest: Dan Ariely

Dan Ariely is a professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University and a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight.

He is the author of the bestsellers Predictably Irrational, The Upside of Irrationality, and The Honest Truth About Dishonesty -- as well as the TED Book Payoff: The Hidden Logic that Shapes Our Motivations.

His latest book is Dollars and Sense: How We Misthink Money and How to Spend Smarter.

In his talk (How to outsmart your financial and health decisions?) he will reveal how can we use findings from social science and behavioural economics to improve our health, financial decision-making and overall quality of life.

About the Organizer:

We have been organizing TEDxYouth@Budapest events since 2010.

On 23 April this year we presented you TEDxBudapestLive, the exclusive, feature broadcast from TED2018. On 12 June we are going to navigate the fine line between rational and irrational with a fantastic guest speaker and inspiring Hungarian presenters at TEDxBudapest 2018.

In August we will be there as always at Sziget Festival with an outstanding lineup.

On November 24 let’s meet again at TEDxYouth@Budapest and spend an inspiring day with the thought-provoking presentations of our young speakers all under 30.
