Hungarians Spend HUF 83,000 Per Month
Hungarians spent on average HUF 82,900 per month last year. Most of this was spent on utilities and food, but expenses were higher in all categories – entertainment, alcohol, education, health – than in 2016, figures released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) show.

The highest amount is spent on food and non-alcoholic beverages, (HUF 22,500 per month), followed by utilities (HUF 17,500). Education is the smallest expense, at HUF 554 per month, KSH says, as cited by portfolio.hu.

Hungarians eat 3.1 kilograms of bread per month, 4.3 kg of vegetables and 4 kg of fruit. Alcoholic beverages and tobbacco amount for HUF 2,971 per month, an 8.1% increase in 2017 compared to 2016, while the amount spent on entertainment and cultural events is HUF 4,701, a 6.4% increase year on year.

Meanwhile, the Policy Agenda research institute has released its "social minimum" figure, which reflects not the threshold of poverty, but a level at which one can afford, above basic needs, products and services that are widely available in the Hungarian society. In 2017, this amounted to HUF 117,720 for a single person and HUF 341,388 for a family with two children.

Based on these figures, 48% of Hungarian households were above the social minimum level, which means that 52% of the population is below this, Policy Agenda says.
