Unique Operation Performed, Device Will Help Many Small Children
A diaphragm pacemaker was inserted into the body of a five-year-old boy at Budapest’s Semmelweis University child clinic in an operation unique in Europe, it was announced on Tuesday.

The boy, who until the operation in May was dependent on a continued night machine respirator, has been well since the surgery.

The diaphragm pacemaker is similar to the device used in heart operations, stimulating the muscles, so that with its help patients can breathe on their own.

Rector Béla Merkely said the university has always striven to introduce and apply innovative solutions.

He said he hopes that this device will help many small children.
