Fully 70% of Hungarians say they are likely to vote in the June European Parliament elections, according to a fresh Eurobarometer survey.
Opposition LMP has called on Gergely Karácsony, Budapest’s incumbent mayor, and Alexandra Szentkirályi, ruling Fidesz’s mayoral candidate, to accept a debate with Dávid Vitézy, the green party’s candidate.
“We cannot accept that Brussels has abandoned Europeans, moreover, turned against them,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a speech marking Hungary’s March 15 national holiday.
President Tamás Sulyok has set Sunday, June 9 as the date of the election of Hungary’s MEPs for the next European Parliament as well as the date of the municipal elections, the presidential Sándor Palace announced on its website.
