Record Waiting Times for Several Surgery Types
Hospital waiting lists for several types of surgery have grown to record lengths, according to data from the National Health Insurance Fund.

This is partly due to the epidemic restrictions, Pénzcentrum reports.

The national average waiting time for hip replacement surgery has grown from 291 days in 2019 to 324 days in May 2020 and 371 days in January 2021. Currently, the average expected waiting time is 528 days for a hip implant.

Waiting lists have increased not only because of the epidemic measures, but also because patients were reluctant to visit doctors and did not submit to the pre-surgery examinations that allow scheduling of operations.

The Ministry of Human Resources announced last September that hospitals would receive Ft 12.2 billion in government support to perform accumulated surgeries and shorten waiting lists.

Elective interventions and rehabilitation resumed on May 13, 2021, when the third wave of the pandemic subsided.
