Food Retailers in Hungary Seek Gov’t Help in Lowering Prices
Food retailers are ready to co-operate with the government on the new decree ordering them to offer regular discounts on food products, as well as on other ways to curb inflation, the retail association OKSZ announced after a meeting with Economy Development Minister Márton Nagy.

Retailers asked for government help in lowering their purchasing prices, warning that, otherwise, cheap imports will flood the domestic market.

Representatives of the Agriculture Ministry were also present at the meeting.

Although OKSZ member companies maintain that the extremely fierce competition on the retail market already helps consumers, the association did not protest publicly against the new measure, contrary to other organisations, but made its proposals at the meeting and also in writing.

The OKSZ hopes that, following the negotiations, a government decision will be made that will help the implementation of the new tasks, easing the burden on them.
