New Bottle Return Rules & Fees in Hungary Revealed
The regulation on the compulsory bottle return scheme to be in effect from January 1 has been published in the Hungarian Gazette.

Accordingly, products subject to mandatory return fee include all glass, metal and plastic bottles and beverage cans with a capacity of between 1 decilitre and 3 litres, except for milk and milk-based beverages.

Producers are obliged to affix the legally required markings on the packaging concerned. In addition, other products or packaging may be voluntarily classified as returnable based on an agreement with the distributor.

The return fee for non-reusable drinks packaging is Ft 50 per item.

The return fee is paid by the producers to waste management company MOHU on a monthly basis.

Returns must be accepted by vending machines, or manually in grocery stores larger than 400 square metres.

Mandatory return points must be established in municipalities with more than 1,000 inhabitants.

Retail outlets that are obliged to operate vending machines will soon be able to register with MOHU. Shops with smaller sales areas can join the system voluntarily.

Producers with a volume of less than 5,000 units per year and bottles of special shapes and sizes may be exempted from the system.

During the transitional period, until June 30, 2024, beverage containers still on the market without labelling will not be phased out and will remain on the shelves of shops for an indefinite period.
