'Fashion & the City': Explore the History of Fashion in Budapest
Open until April 2024. The BHM Kiscell Museum celebrates the 150th anniversary of the ‘birth’ of Budapest – the unification of the towns of Pest, Buda and Óbuda – with a comprehensive exhibition about the past 150 years of fashion in Budapest.

The temporary exhibition, presents the milestones of the city’s development, and shows how the social and cultural changes in various periods were reflected in and shaped by fashion, and what role fashion played in the evolution of the Hungarian capital’s identity.

The Fashion and the City exhibition covers the period between 1873 and 2023, bringing the past close to visitors with 250 exhibits, all with a link to these years and their events. Most exhibits are from the museum’s collection, but several major Hungarian cultural institutions also lent items to the exhibition.

The items on display tell the viewers about historical and political events, technological advancement, changes in people’s lifestyle and the evolution of fashion. The 120+ garments, fashion accessories, documents and other special items offer a glimpse into the various periods in the fascinating exhibition space of the Kiscell Museum – a 18th century Baroque church ruin.

The past 150 years have brought periods of peace and wars, and Budapest has been developing at an incredible pace. From the items on display, you can see how fashion evolved at the turn of the 19th century, and how it was impacted by the world wars and later by the socialist era.

The fashion of the 2000s is presented through the Budapest-inspired creations of 23 contemporary Hungarian fashion designers.
