Canada Day, July 1 2006 marks 139 years of Confederation
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hungary in association with the Canadian Embassy celebrated 'CANADA DAY' on Friday the 30 June 2006.
The Embassy of Canada celebrated Canada Day on Friday June 30 with an official reception provided by Ambassador Robert Hage at his residence . During his remarks, Ambassador Hage noted that this special year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. In this spirit, Canada's House of Commons adopted last week a Resolution officially recognizing and commemorating the struggles and sacrifices of the Hungarian people to achieve their freedom. Canada took in 37,000 Hungarian refugees in 1956-57, on a per capita basis the highest proportion of Hungarian refugees of any country.
"On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty's loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1st."
"There is no record of organized ceremonies after this first anniversary, except for the 50th anniversary of Confederation in 1917. Then since 1958, the Canadian government has arranged for an annual observance of Canada's national day."
