Apple opens centre in Budapest


US computer manufacturer Apple opened a sales and service centre in Budapest yesterday, director Emanuele Massimo announced. Two more centres will be opened in Budapest this year, along with one in Prague and another in Sarajevo. There are 110 Apple Centres in Europe.

Esztergom awash in water park debt


The city of Esztergom faces a lawsuit and heavy financial losses after cancelling a contract to build a water leisure park. Esztergom received a Ft 900 million subsidy, approved in 2001, to build the park, in the belief that it would cost some Ft 2 billion. Instead, the lowest bid was about Ft 4 billion. The city eventually signed a nearly Ft 4 billion contract with Contur-Bau, the winner of the second tender, with reduced technology requirements.

Magyar opens PPP student residence


Education Minister Balint Magyar yesterday opened the Ft 4 billion Hotel Campus, one of Hungary’s best-fitted student residences, built via a public-private partnership (PPP), in Debrecen. Single monthly accommodation at the residence costs Ft 20,000, and a double room Ft 16,000 per month. Internet access, telephones and television are installed in the rooms, and residents can make use of a bowling alley, fitness room, sauna, solarium, post office and laundry facilities.

Hungary's Holocaust museum to unveil permanent exhibition in early 2006


A permanent exhibit will be unveiled in early 2006 at Hungary's Holocaust museum, with the fate of four families used to illustrate the suffering of hundreds of thousands of the country's Jews.

The Holocaust Memorial Center, inaugurated last year, has had several temporary exhibits, but no permanent collection. It has set educating youth as one of its key aims.

Indian Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. announced on Wednesday that it bought a stake in the Hungarian unit of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (formerly ICN). The terms of the deal have not been revealed by either of the parties.
