Xpat Interview: Badr Bennis

"I have been in Budapest for the past 6 months, after 2 years in Rome. I was born in Wimbledon and lived in London until I was 20. My passion for food and hospitality has been with me for as long as I can remember. Probably instinctively taken from my dad, he is Moroccan and insists on asking you what you would like for dinner before you have finished lunch! My mum is English and also a food lover. I enjoy life, working hard, meeting people and having fun!"


1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I arrived in April this year to take up a position in Le Meridien Hotel

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
I have previously lived in Paris, Florence and Rome

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
The sunny climate! I was expecting the girls J

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend--what must they absolutely see and do?
Check out the view from the top of Szent Istvan`s Basilica, take a swim in the Szechenyi Baths and enjoy an evening stroll on the riverside and castle district

5. What is your favorite Hungarian food?
Paprikás pogácsa

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Soproni sör

7. What is your favorite Hungarian word?
Csókolom

8. What do you miss the most from home?
Don?t really consider anywhere to be home, I was in Italy for the past two years and what I miss most is the pasta!

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Secret agent

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Chicken farmer

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Ischia ? beautiful island off the coast of Naples

12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Brazil or Argentina

13 What was your favorite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
I loved Nightrider, Michael Knight and Kit could keep me entertained for hours!

14. What can't you resist?
Chocolate milk

15. Red wine or white?
Good Hungarian red wine like Malatinsky Cab - Franc

16. Book or movie?
Movie

17. Morning person or night person?
Night, sometimes morning if I am still up!

18. Dog person or cat person?
I like both but if I had to choose definitely dog. We used to have two rottweilers!

19. Buda side or Pest side?
Pest for the night life, Buda for the great views and nature

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Treat others as one would wish to be treated
