Xpat Interview: Jamila Izmailov

I was born in UK with mix parents.

I am currently living in Hungary but completing my studies at Oxford.

I speak English, Russian, Tajik and little bit of Persian and now trying to learn Hungarian and Urdu.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I never believed in "love at first sight" but when i met him during a workshop in Oxford.I was just melted and speechless. My heart brought me here. I am of mixed origin of Azerbaijan (mother) and Pakistani (father) but grew up in the UK. My partner (who also is of Pakistani origin but a Canadian) works for an international org. in Budapest. I just moved in April 2010 from UK and liked the city so far. What is most important for me is that I with someone I love to.I will shuttle between Oxford and Budapest until I finish my doctorate in Humanitarian Law by end of this year.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Yes, I used to live in the US for sometime.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
Very dynamic and historical city. I never realized that Hungary is so beautiful , dynamic and cheerful people. I believe a lot can be done and achieved.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Oh my God..so many things. It was my second day in Budapest when my partner took me to a surprise ride and we ended up on the heights of "Citadel" I loved the city's view at night and most importantly "kiss in the full moon". I will defiantly recommend to romantic couples to enjoy that view and of course..the "K". I also went to various museums and of course to "music festival in Balaton.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I will finish my doctorate in humanitarian law and would love to continue my career in the humanitarian field. My partner works for a refugee org. and I would like to be with him in the same area. I love helping people in need and this will give me a chance to be with someone who is in the same field and can understand me. Of course this was my dream to be able to make a difference in this world. This will also provide me an opportunity to travel and see other culture and countries.
