Caitlin Jones, Former Deputy Head of Mission, British Embassy
As her name suggests, Caitlin hails from a Welsh family and studied European Studies at Cardiff University. She joined the FCO in 1990 after a stint working at an Argentinian Bank where she was able to use her Spanish. She also speaks French and now a little Hungarian.

She and her husband Steve are here with their beagle. They all love walking in the Buda Hills. Steve and Caitlin also enjoy watching rugby, but when England (who Steve supports) and Wales play against each other, it’s a divided family!

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I arrived in mid-November to start my job as Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy. We feel very lucky to be here: a beautiful, friendly, interesting European capital. Just what we wanted.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Yes – I’ve lived and worked in Cuba, Guatemala, Brussels and Cyprus. Each has been fascinating in its own way, although I have to admit to a certain romantic attachment to Latin America which makes those postings particularly special.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
Bin lorries on Christmas Day.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Pause and drink in the amazing views around the capital. That’s what takes my breath away.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Káposztás tészta. Wicked but yum.

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
A lime for my G&T.

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Hűha!

8. What do you miss most from home?
Easy - family. But Budapest is close enough for us to go home regularly and for them to visit – another great thing about the being here.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Marine biologist with a specialism in coral reefs.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Politician. I’m a Sir Humphrey through and through.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
In the Lake District in the UK, climbing fells and recovering in the pub afterwards.

12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
In Croatia like the rest of Hungary.

13. Apart of temptation what can't you resist?
Anything, sadly.

14. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
My favourite film has always been “Some like it hot”. It never fails to make me giggle.

15. Red wine or white?
Red in the winter, white in the summer.

16. Book or movie?
Book. And just to be controversial, preferably an i-book.

17. Morning person or night person?
Morning. Don’t try to get any sense out of me after about 5pm.

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Dementia. It’s a cruel disease, it’s very tough for families to go through; and a good official and unofficial support network is essential.

19. Buda or Pest side?
Buda for living; Pest for life.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
There are so many to choose from. Can I pick two? “A head full of fears has no space for dreams”; and “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”
