Now Showing In Budapest: 'Evening'

Now Showing In Budapest: 'Evening'
"Constance and Nina sit by their mother's bed as she is nearing the end of her life. Meanwhile, Ann, their mother, is thinking back over the years wondering whether she had made mistakes along the way. She thinks back fifty years when she met Harris Arden at the wedding of her dearest friend from college. When Ann calls out for the man she loved more than any other, her daughters wonder who he is.

Movie type: Drama - This drama is aimed at women, particularly older ones. Those drawn by Meryl Streep will be disappointed with her very small role, but fans of the other name actresses should be pleased. The film is also darker than the advertising leads on.

Director: Koltai Lajos

Script: Susan Minot, Michael Cunningham

Starring: Claire Danes (young Ann), Vanessa Redgrave (Ann Grant Lord), Meryl Streep (Lila Wittenborn), Glenn Close (Mrs. Wittenborn)

Length: 1 hr. 57 min.

Reviews:

”Good Evening possesses a quiet dignity. The film is sad, but its approach is low key and it doesn't resort to the shameless manipulation that marred The Notebook's final act.” Berardinelli, Internet Critic

”Average The movie seeks to disprove its own assertion: Despite the wealth of talent that populates this generational drama, the film is tedious and uninvolving.” USA Today

”Above Average Screenwriters Susan Minot and fellow novelist Michael Cunningham make key changes to Minot's acclaimed 1997 book with mixed results; the alterations streamline the story and enrich subplots, but dilute its all-important central relationship.” TV Guide Online

”Average ...This condemnation can be easily applied to the whole movie, which comes across more like someone's half-realized idea of literate, profound drama than the real thing.” Newsday
