BA Welcomes EU Decision To Qualify BA Clean Airport Again

BA Welcomes EU Decision To Qualify BA Clean Airport Again
"Budapest Airport (BA) welcomes the decision of the European Commission to qualify BA as ’clean’ again from the security perspective. 21 December, 2007 the Aviation Directorate of the National Transport Authority notified BA officially that as a result of the changes and investments by Budapest Airport in the field of security the airport is now fully compliant with EU requirements.

The European Commission has already informed member states, which means that goods purchased in retail outlets at the airport are no longer confiscated at some European airports. Passengers departing from Budapest Airport are free to buy any item in the duty free shops in the transit area and can take them on board without any restriction.

Budapest Airport dedicated billions of HUF to achieving ‘clean’ status once more for its facilities. With a price tag of HUF 2.5 billion, 19 411 meters of new security fence was erected, by which the security restricted zones – runways, aprons, taxiways and transit areas – were physically separated off from other airport areas.

For a further HUF 500 million, Budapest Airport commissioned three brand new state-of-the-art baggage screening X-ray units at its terminals. The airport operator also increased headcount by 70 in its passenger security department.

Budapest Airport CEO Jost Lammers said: “This is a great achievement and it may be a real source of pride for not only the airport operator but also for Hungary. Passengers who are traveling through and shopping at Budapest Airport can now enjoy their time at all our facilities in a relaxed fashion. Our task as the operator of the airport now is to maintain positive results achieved during the last few months.”
