"A man barricaded himself in his house, shot a policeman and a paramedic and then put a bullet in his brain on Friday in Tét, Hungary, local newswire MTI reported. The police went to his house to detain him for beating up the manager of a local retirement home who sent him away because he acted violently.The 41-year old man reportedly became agitated after he was sent away from the local retirement home where he was hired for occasional jobs. (The police said earlier he was employed there and became angry when he was fired. The police wanted to detain him early on Friday, having learned that earlier today he beat up the manager of the retirement home. He tried to strangle her and during the fight he broke her nose. She also suffered concussion and was transported to a hospital later on.
When the police arrived, he barricaded himself in his house and started shooting at the officers. He hit one of them who suffered injuries to his kidney and intestines. According to MTI, the officer will go under surgery soon.
The man fired some 100 shots, hitting the ambulance and a car of the border guards on scene. A paramedic suffered minor injuries on his elbow from a ricocheted bullet. A negotiator managed to talk to the man and was briefly even allowed into his home. When she was sent outside, she tried to talk the man out of his predicament from the yard through the phone, but failed.
The crime scene was sealed off. There is a kindergarten some 100 metres from the house.
Shortly before 10:00 CET a 30-strong SWAT team arrived to the scene and were about to storm the house when the man shot himself in the head. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him. (Update: Later he died in the hospital.)
The man had been convicted for violent crimes and also did time. He used to train in the boxing club of the Gyõr police and his acquaintances said he was a violent man.
In the house he had his mother and disabled father, but there is no information yet about their condition.
Tét is 24 km south of the town of Gyõr in northwest Hungary. "
