"Contrary to earlier speculation for a new Mercedes plant to be set up in Romania, the Daimler Group is now considering Hungary in addition to Poland and Romania as potential locations, Hungarian business daily Napi Gazdaság reported.The new factory will produce new generation A and B class Mercedes, management talks regarding the location are taking place next Tuesday.
According to German magazines Auto Motor Und Sport and Automobilwoche also mentioned Serbia as a potential location, and these souces consider Romania as the least likely candidate. Daimler's spokesperson did not comment on the news last weekend. Plans for the new plant specify a minimum capacity of 100,000 cars per year.
In January, a Romanian newspaper reported it as a fact that the auto plant will be set up at an industrial park near Kolozs County's Nokia plant, Napi reminded. According to that report, the plant will be built on a 200-hectare plot at a cost of EUR 400 million by the year 2011. The Romanian paper claimed that the plant would employ 4,000 staff and assemble 350,000 cars per year."
