 "György Gulyás, Malév first officer on B737s, has been declared world champion at the 30th World Gliding Championships organized in Lüsse, Germany.The first place achieved by the Malév Aero Club competitor piloting a Ventus 2B glider is unparalleled in the history of Hungarian gliding. The final result in the 15 metre wingspan category was announced on the basis of eight different competition tasks.
This year’s world championships attracted the highest number of entries ever, with 130 pilots from 34 countries in Germany for the competition.
He started flying gliders under the aegis of the Malév Aero Club from Dunakeszi airstrip at the age of 16. In 1987 he won the first domestic gliding national championship, and today he is the holder of 10 Hungarian championships.
He began flying powered aircraft in 1994, and he has been first officer with Malév on B737 planes since 2002. In addition to his work and gliding he also teaches students of gliding and motor-powered flying at the Malév Aero Club. Retired Malév pilot and Hungarian coach Péter Gönczi trained György Gulyás for competition flying."
