Budapest Design Week, 3 - 12 October

Budapest Design Week, 3 - 12 October
"In 2008 the central theme idea is 'Dialogue'. The culture of constant development, so characteristic of our age, is in fact the outcome of constant dialogue. This jubilee Design Week lasts for 10 days, from the 3rd till the 12th of October.

The world of materials and objects around us, the visual culture, in which we live emerge, from designers’ responses to the needs of society and cultural demands. Dialogue takes place simultaneously between designer and audience, user and object, client/manufacturer and designer, past and present culture, as well as one discipline and another.

The main topic of this year's Design Week refers to the interaction between user and object, the cooperation between client/manufacturer and designer, the active relationship between designer and the society.

The exuberant program taking place at dozens of venues offer great opportunities for those interested in the field to learn about the most recent results, developments of Hungarian and international design. Altogether more than 50 different events, exhibitions, fashion shows, conferences and roundtables await visitors.

This year Design Week has a star designer guest, the world famous Dutch Marcel Wanders who gives a lecture at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest (MOME). The work of the most original figure in the contemporary design scene is of high significance in design history, as well, while his studio based in Amsterdam is an active participant in several European and international success stories.

The presentation of the materials and the winners of the 2008 Hungarian Design Awards in the Museum of Applied Arts is the most prestigious event of the Design Week. This year it is expanded with the Form on Tour travelling exhibition showcasing the highlights from the past five years of the Awards.

The same venue gives home to Taste MOMEnts, an exhibition of about 100 objects from 27 designers, as well as to a contemporary Hungarian fashion show.

After visiting New York, London and Berlin, the „Made in Italy” design exhibition showcasing about 100 award-winning pieces from some of the most prominent Italian designers, along brand-new works of young talents is arriving to Budapest during Design Week. An unconventional event of the program is the design edition of the internationally successful Pecha Kucha Nights where acclaimed Hungarian and foreign designers talk about their most recent work in the form of brief, dynamic presentations.

This year’s design tour offer an insight into the interior design secrets of some top-class Budapest hotels with the guidance of acclaimed Hungarian interior designers. The fifth anniversary of Design Week is celebrated with an initiative realised in collaboration with design shops – more than 50 shops around Budapest offer a 15% discount during Design Week. A series of mini art exhibitions, Portfolio, displaying the work of young illustrators at 20 cultural centres of the capital (in cafés, galleries, speciality shops) is a real delicacy this year."
