Beating King Kong In Burgerland by Ágnes Vinkovits

Beating King Kong In Burgerland by Ágnes Vinkovits
" The Wikinger burger shop at Móricz Zsigmond körtér is one of those places that nightwalkers of Budapest cannot pass by without picking up something to eat. It is open all night long, offering delicious and substantial burgers at reasonable prices between Ft 560 and Ft 1,090.

Therefore, this place had been one of my personal favorites for several years until a day about half a year ago, when a new chef appeared at the display kitchen of Wikinger. He soon banished all the regulars by smoking the steaks and leaving the lettuce out of the burgers.

Then, I resentfully avoided Wikinger for long months. But last week, when peeping into its kitchen through the window, I contentedly noticed that the chef, who ruined that great spot, has been replaced at last.

Why not give another try and taste a new burger from the new burger boy? - I thought as I entered the place. I took a Hot Burger (Tüzes burger) instead of my good old favorite, the Gastronomic Orgasm (Ft 580) which is a tasty, solid burger with all the pleasure in it that one can expect from a substantial dish: steak, lettuce, sunny-side up, mushroom and cabbage.

My current pick, the Hot Burger (Ft 600) wasn’t lacking the mouth-watering ingredients either. I hoped that the steak, lettuce, cabbage, onion and tomato with American sauce and double chili sauce would stand in harmony.

Unfortunately, Hot Burger didn’t give me a chance to find out the mysterious ingredients of the American sauce, since the whole stuff, as its name “Hot” suggests somehow, was flooded with chili that crowded out all the other flavors.

All in all, the meat in my Hot Burger was deliciously medium fried, accompanied with fresh vegetables and all put into a nice and tasty buci (should translate as burger roll).

Opposite me, I saw a shocked face. My partner’s choice, the King Kong Burger, had more from the creamy “American sauce” and smelt great but was so extremely huge that he could hardly focus on anything but its size.

The burger (Ft 1 090), which a few days later my partner is still in the process of digesting, is built up from three steaks, 2 slices of bacon, American salad, lettuce, tomato, onion and cabbage. It weighed more than two and a half pounds, which seems enough for a football team together with the cheerleaders, but is unnecessarily oversized for one person.

Although my partner did his best to beat King Kong, but after fighting with the tasty and juicy energy bomb for fifteen minutes without making any visible harm to it, he gave up the challenge.

For those who don’t want to shock their stomach that much, Wikinger offers salads and some regular dishes as well which can also be taken away or consumed right there at the dining area of the spot."
