The accession countries were sharply criticized yesterday by German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson for their "parasitic" strategy of luring corporate taxpayers away from Western Europe with low taxes while expecting to draw on the current member states' contributions to develop their economies. German companies moving East were branded as "un-patriotic" by Schröder. But current EU members will benefit from the enlargement as well, UK PM Tony Blair has pointed out. British exports to the eight largest accession states doubled over the past 10 years, and the new markets already support as many as 100,000 jobs in the UK. (MH 1) P.P.
