Hungary to receive euro 616 million from EU Cohesion Funds for environmental protection

Hungary could receive up to EURO 616 million between 2004 and 2006 from the EU cohesion funds for environmental protection, according to Margot Wallström, EU Environment Commissioner.

The EU will allocate a total of EURO 3-6 billion from the Cohesion Funds to the soon-to-be EU members to help them comply with EU environmental norms. Most efforts will have to be made in the area of sewage cleaning: in Hungary only 32 % of households are connected to sewerage systems, far less than in the other future member states.
