As a result of a sudden surge from 4 to 178 buyers yr/yr, Irish citizens made up 40% of the 451 foreign investors who purchased residential real estate in Budapest in Q1, according to the latest statistics of the Interior Ministry. Dist. 9 stood out as the single most popular acquisition target for the Irish, attracting 117 of the 178 investors, who typically purchased 10-20 apartments in the same development project. Among the increasingly active foreign investors were Germans, British and Romanians, while American and Israeli acquisitions did not increase significantly yr/yr. Overall, purchases in downtown areas such as Dist. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 accounted for some 50% of all foreign investment, whereas the more prestigious districts in Buda were less sought after.
