Brick maker Wienerberger expands in new EU states

Austria's Wienerberger, the world's largest brick maker, is expanding in Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary with plant acquisitions and new capacity totalling 43 million euros, the group said on Tuesday.

Wienerberger is already active in all three markets, which are among the 10 mainly eatsern European states that joined the Euroean Union on May 1.

Wienerberger said it was buying three brick plants in south-eastern and northern Poland with total revenue of 8.2 million euros and capacity of 150 million brick units for 16.5 million euros, including planned plant additions.

The sellers are Ploegsteert International N.V. and Vandersanden Steenfabriken N.V., Wienerberger said in a statement.

The Austrian group will also build a new hollow brick plant in the Czech Republic in Jezernice with a capacity of 140 million brick units for about 20 million euros and invest 6.5 million euros to expand capacity at one of its 14 Hungarian plants from 70 million to 125 million brick units.
