Chaos at the British border, due to lack of passport from new EU citizens

There was chaos at the British border yesterday, 3rd May, as citizens from the new EU member states wanted to get into the country with only an identity card.

Citizens from the Eastern European member states claimed that it was their embassies in London who informed them about the possibility of getting into Britain without a passport. According to György Abelovsky, the Hungarian Chief Consul in Britain, it is possible to enter Britain with either a passport or a valid identity card that contains data in English.
