Levi may move plant to Hungary

Citing high labor costs and competitiveness problems, Levi Strauss & Co. have announced plans to shut down two plants in the Spanish towns of Soria and Girona, with Poland, Hungary or possibly Turkey named as potential new locations for these capacities, various wire services reported. According to the reports, Levi's current production in Hungary will definitely not be adversely affected by the move, even if the company picks another country to take over manufacturing from the plants in Spain.

Levi's waning brand appeal in the U.S. market may also have played a role in the decision, analysts commented. (NG 4) P.P.
