Nominees for new EU Commission |
European Union governments are in the final stages of nominating candidates to serve in the next executive European Commission, which takes office in November. Following is a list of nominated or likely candidates, with their existing positions in the Commission or as ministers in their national governments, and the positions for which their countries are proposing them, where known:
The EU's 25 member states will each have one commissioner.

PORTUGAL: Former Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso - European Commission president-designate.
AUSTRIA: Foreign Minister Benita Fererro-Waldner.
BELGIUM: Foreign Minister Louis Michel - humanitarian aid and development assistance.
BRITAIN: Former Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Mandelson - major economic post.
CYPRUS: Commissioner Markos Kyprianou.
CZECH: Outgoing Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla - justice, enlargement or transport.
DENMARK: Possibly Immigration Minister Bertel Haarder for research and science or Food, Agricultural and Fisheries Minister Mariann Fischer Boel for fisheries.
ESTONIA: Commissioner Siim Kallas.
FINLAND: Enterprise and Information Technology Commissioner Olli Rehn.
FRANCE: Regional Aid Commissioner Jacques Barrot - top economic job.
GERMANY: Enlargement Commissioner Guenter Verheugen - big economic portfolio.
GREECE: Social and Employment Commissioner Stavros Dimas.
HUNGARY: Commissioner Peter Balazs - regional development.
IRELAND: Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy.
ITALY: European Affairs Minister Rocco Buttiglione. There had been speculation that Italian Mario Monti, who has held the important competition portfolio, might stay on.
LATVIA: Possibly Commissioner Sandra Kalniete.
LITHUANIA: Possibly Commissioner Dalia Grybauskaite.
LUXEMBOURG: Culture and Education Commissioner Viviane Reding.
MALTA: Commissioner Joe Borg.
NETHERLANDS: Possibly Agriculture Minister Cees Veerman for agriculture or former Transport Minister Neelie Kroes for transport.
POLAND: Commissioner Danuta Huebner - trade.
SLOVAKIA: Commissioner Jan Figel.
SLOVENIA: Commissioner Janez Potocnik - enlargement.
SPAIN: Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia.
