Team by team summary of Sunday's Japanese Formula One Grand Prix:
- - - -
FERRARI (Michael Schumacher 1, Rubens Barrichello retired)
Schumacher's 13th win of the season and Ferrari's 15th. The German secured pole in the first qualifying session held on the morning of the race and raced on untroubled. Barrichello started 15th after a qualifying mistake and retired with a broken front suspension after a collision with McLaren's David Coulthard.
-
BAR (Jenson Button 3, Takuma Sato 4)
The Honda-powered home favourites all but secured second place in the championship with Button taking their 11th podium of the year in their 100th race. Sato was in pain for much of the race with a sore shoulder and malfunctioning water bottle.
-
RENAULT (Fernando Alonso 5, Jacques Villeneuve 10)
Villeneuve qualified ahead of Alonso but again failed to score points in his second race for the team. Renault's battle for second place looks to be dead in the water.
-
WILLIAMS (Ralf Schumacher 2, Juan Pablo Montoya 7)
Ralf put Williams back on the podium for the first time since April to consolidate their fourth place in the championship. Montoya lost places when he miscued an overtaking manoeuvre on Toyota's Jarno Trulli.
-
MCLAREN (Kimi Raikkonen 6, David Coulthard retired)
Coulthard had looked the quicker of the two but Barrichello put paid to his chances. Raikkonen, who finished second at Suzuka last year to end the year as runner-up, never looked comfortable.
-
SAUBER (Giancarlo Fisichella 8, Felipe Massa 9)
Fisichella should have finished higher but an off-track excursion at the Spoon curve on lap 16 cost him places. Massa did well to come back from 19th on the grid. Sauber are assured of sixth place but cannot catch McLaren.
-
JAGUAR (Christian Klien 12, Mark Webber retired)
Webber stood out in qualifying, nailing third place. But he could not make it stick in the race and an overheating seat forced him to retire after 20 laps. Klien had a good day, qualifying 14th after minimal practice on an unfamiliar circuit.
-
TOYOTA (Jarno Trulli 11, Olivier Panis 14)
Trulli made his Toyota debut as Panis said farewell, bowing out of Formula One after 158 starts. This was not one of the races he will want to remember, even if it was Toyota's 50th.
-
JORDAN (Nick Heidfeld 13, Timo Glock 15)
Heidfeld had some minor electronic problems and could not get into neutral on one of the pitstops. He also lost time when the pit lane speed limiter engaged on the circuit. Glock had gear and engine problems and collided with Raikkonen as the Finn tried to lap him towards the end.
-
MINARDI (Gianmaria Bruni 16, Zsolt Baumgartner retired)
Bruni ran untroubled through three pitstops to finish for the first time since August. Baumgartner failed to set a time in qualifying and spun out on lap 45 just before what would have been his last pitstop.
