Her Majesty's ambassador Mr. Nigel James Thorpe CVO (HMA Budapest)
Nigel Thorpe was appointed as British Ambassador in Budapest in 1998. He has a wealth of Central European experience having served twice at the British Embassy in Warsaw and once as Head of the Central European Department in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.
The Ambassador speaks Polish and is currently learning Hungarian - although he admits that Hungarian is one of the toughest language challenges in his career so far! He enjoys tennis, swimming and walking his faithful labrador - Dido!
He believes that this is an exciting time to be in Hungary. "During my first year here I have welcomed Hungary's accession to NATO. I sincerely hope to be here to celebrate its accession to the European Union. The Hungarians are a remarkable people with a fascinating culture and admirable spirit - I feel privileged to be serving here."
