Although farmers and government officials came closer than ever to an agreement that would end a nationwide demonstration after more than two weeks, the dispute over state subsidies to livestock keeper still remained open. The negotiations are expected to resume at 10 a.m. on Friday. The farmers are demanding immediate payment of direct EU farm subsidies, protection from cheap food imports, write-offs of loans and speedier processing of grain for intervention storage. They have blocked traffic on roads around Hungary and have brought hundreds of tractors to Budapest. (MTI; NG 3, Nb 1)
