Xpat Watch: Tacos Locos Mexican Brunch In Budapest

Xpat Watch: Tacos Locos Mexican Brunch In Budapest
I finally tried the Sunday All-You-Can-Eat Brunch at this much-advertised Mexican restaurant on Erzsébet Krt. The sun was shining and the waitress seated me outside and explained about the Brunch, priced at 2,990 ft. It included all of the dishes set out in the serving tables, plus fruit juices. I'd also heard they had a molé dish, but that wasn't on the brunch menu, unfortunately. Anyway, I checked out the food available...

There were several types of chicken, poppers, flautas, poblano palacsinta, rice, chile (with the ubiquitous Hungarian corn mixed in), sopas, various sauces and other smaller portions of meats and veggies.

I ordered several of the dishes to start with, and the server put each one on a separate plate; some of the plates were almost too big to fit on the tray. I had to make two trips to get it all to my table. Plus, horror of horrors, the food was reheated in a microwave. Hmmm.

But all of the servers were friendly, so I was still anticipating some good Mexican food. The chile (that's the way we spell it in New Mexico) had a nice tang, but the rest of the dishes, even the poppers, seemed somewhat bland for my educated Mexican food tastes.

After many years in Southern California, New Mexico and Texas, I am a veritable fount of knowledge about good Mexican food, spicy chiles (ask me about the Scoville Scale) and the various flavorings and seasonings used in the many types of Mexican and New Mexican food.

The food was filling, although only heated to a warm level, but it left me - and my dining companion - surprisingly unsatisfied. We both wanted more robust flavors, more heat, more spice - more oomph!

Mexican food - good Mexican food - should leave a few burn scars on one's palate. The sweat on one's brow should be a normal result of properly-prepared Mexican food. While Tacos Locos serves up some acceptable standard Mexican fare, if you're looking for the best Mexican taste treat in town, walk a few blocks west to Arriba.
