"The Transport Ministry has not yet made a ruling on the request of international bus company Orangeways to operate domestic routes in Hungary, and asked for a 30-day extension period, CEO Miklos Kovacs said after meeting with ministry officials. The privately owned bus company would operate express routes from Budapest to five other major cities, placing it in direct competition with regional bus company Volan.
Volan trade unions vociferously oppose the plan and say Orangeways is cherry picking the most profitable routes, endangering the position of the state-owned regional bus company.
Orangeways would invest Ft 800 million in the services, which could create 100 jobs, Kovacs said. Orangeways carried 100,000 passengers in the first six months, generating monthly revenues of Ft 140 million."
