On Saturday and Sunday, from 10 to 22 hours, the 90 cm-tall Champions League (CL) trophy was on display in Budapest, in the Champions League Tent, located at Felvonulási tér, as part of the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour. Entrance was free for all.The event was opened by UEFA-ambassador, and two-time CL-winner, Christian Karembeu of France and 1977 Golden Ball winner, Allan Simonsen of Denmark. Aside from getting a look at the trophy, visitors could also see pictures and videos of the CL’s greatest teams and players, as well as various CL memorabilia.
“I’m really happy to be here in Hungary,” said Karembeu, “especially because, at the beginning of my career, Ferenc Puskás and the legendary Real Madrid players were my idols. In my opinion this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for every football fan because they can have up-close views of the trophy, which is the most important for every European football player.”
Kimmo Bellmann, a spokesperson for the UEFA, said that the tour, which has five stages (Milan, Zagreb, Bucharest, Budapest, and Sofia), is not only to show the trophy, but also to tell people more about the history and many memorable matches of most prestigious cup series.
