"State railway company MÁV closed 24 passenger lines on the orders of the Traffic Ministry on Sunday.Initially three more lines had been sched-uled for closure, but the Karád-Siófok, Nyíre-gyháza-Vásárosnamény and Nyíregyháza-Nyírbátor lines were ultimately saved from closure. Rail services on the Zirc-Veszprém line have been discontinued on weekdays.
The Transport Ministry declared Sunday as the beginning of a new era as revised rail-way and coach timetables came into effect.
Duplicated rail and bus services have been terminated. More trains and fewer coaches will connect larger cities, while buses will replace trains on less used lines, although at present this has only been partially implemented in all Hungary’s timetables."
