Invitation: Győr Ballet: Zorba the Greek, Festival Theater Budapest, 27 February
“The story of Zorba had a very profound effect on me. A man who can rediscover the sunny side of life through dance even after the deepest distress, who finds his feet again after every setback – I think all of us would like to be like him. The writer, the composer and the choreographer all endeavour to recount Zorba’s story faithfully to the audience, but their differing tools of expression mean they are only able to reach this same goal in completely different ways.

Sometimes a writer can achieve an effect with a single sentence which is almost impossible to reproduce in the language of dance, but there are also occasions when a single movement is far more expressive.

I have tried to adjust this piece to Zorba’s positive personality while naturally allowing the dramatic turns in the action to leave their mark on the images created. I hope that the exertions of Zorba to turn the conventional European character of Englishman John towards his own joie de vivre and positive approach to life on Crete will prove fertile soil for you, the audience, as well, and that you return to your homes after the show richer in spirit.” Gyula Harangozó
