Hungary's Economy Ministry Will Not Re-Regulate Alcohol Retail
The Economy Ministry has denied a Thursday report that the government will re-regulate the sale of alcoholic beverages after monopolising the wholesale trade in tobacco products.

A working draft of the Economy Ministry indicates that the government is considering changes in the sale of alcohol, but without causing serious shortfalls in excise tax and VAT revenues, left-leaning weekly Magyar Narancs reports.

Regulators reportedly examined models elsewhere, especially Scandinavian countries, but do not wish to introduce strict rules that would markedly set back demand, leading to a wave of closure of small shops and job losses.
