‘Spy’ publicist turns down medal

"The publicist who suffered accusations of being an informer last week has rejected a state prize via a letter to Culture Minister Andras Bozoki.

Jozsef Debreczeni was to be awarded the Order of Merit, Knight’s Cross, of the Republic of Hungary but said receiving it would “mar the credibility of his work.”

Fidesz chairman Viktor Orban on Tuesday dismissed rumours alleging that one time Democratic Forum MP Debreczeni had acted as an agent for the state in the 1980s.

Debreczeni thanked the Fidesz leader, but added that Orban’s public support would have been more appreciated on the day after the slurs appeared. “The change of regime has happened and I will continue to speak out against all those who want to carry out another one,” he said."
