McCain Has Stern Words For Hungary
US Republican Senator John McCain expressed concern for Hungary’s democratic institutions and called for external monitoring of the April elections while on a one-day visit to Budapest’s on Friday.

After talks with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and later with opposition leaders Attila Mesterházy and Gordon Bajnai, he said Washington has assured its allies that the US will only carry out surveillance in connection with threats affecting the US and its allies.

McCain told reporters at the Bank Center that concerns have arisen about the state of democracy in Hungary both within and outside the country, and some of those are serious.

He said it is in the interest of the US and the whole free world to see Hungary continue to be a strong, receptive and tolerant democracy with a free market economy, an independent judiciary and a free press.
