Opposition Parties In Hungary Comment On Juncker Election
The opposition Socialist Party congratulated Jean-Claude Juncker on Tuesday on his election to European Commission president and voiced support for his programme to the transformation of Europe. The radical nationalist Jobbik, however, said that Juncker will make Europe a “continent of immigrants” which will completely change current ethnic proportions, while the leftist Democratic Coalition described his election as the “fulfilment of the wish of European citizens.”

Deputy Socialist group leader József Tóbiás told MTI in a statement that the party had been supporting Juncker’s candidacy from the very start despite the fact that he was nominated by the European People’s Party. Juncker’s programme is an important message to the European community, with a focus on economic growth, job creation and offering opportunities to young people.

Hungary faces similar problems and challenges as Europe and the Socialists maintain their position that “more Europe and fewer opponents” are needed.

Jobbik criticised Juncker in a statement sent to MTI, and said that his programme “fails to even mention the greatest problem in Europe” which, according to Jobbik, is the growing gap between countries on the outskirts of the continent and in the centre of Europe.

DK told MTI in a statement that Hungary can only be successful as a member of the EU and there was no alternative to EU membership.
