Hungary’s Ruling Fidesz Party Dismisses Kroes’ Criticism On Media Freedom
Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party has dismissed criticism on media freedom by European Commission Vice- President Neelie Kroes, insisting that the new ad tax served the sole purpose of enhanced burden-sharing.

Gergely Gulyás, a spokesman for the party, said “Hungary’s media is free and diverse and Hungarian society is also free”.

in a blog entry on Monday that media freedom remained under threat in Hungary, signalled by the introduction of the ad tax, which “disproportionately affects one single company, RTL”.

Gulyás said the tax was introduced after several years of consultations and it was a matter of burden-sharing, in which companies earlier making extra profit must also take part.
