In NE Hungary Diósgyőr Castle Opens To Visitors

The Diósgyőr castle in Hungary’s northeast opened its doors to the public after extensive renovations on Saturday. The castle was reconstructed at a cost of 2.714 billion forints (EUR 8.6m), mainly with EU support, László L. Simon, state secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, said at the opening ceremony.
He praised the project as exemplary in heritage reconstruction in that it was careful to follow original plans of the period.
He added that the upcoming Buda Castle royal palace reconstruction project would draw on experiences from Diósgyőr, too.
The Diósgyőr castle, dated back to the 1340s, was rebuilt in full two storeys to include the largest knight’s hall in central Europe as well as a chapel and the queen’s chambers.
