Exactly 25 years have passed since Hungary opened its borders and allowed tens of thousands of East German tourists to escape to the West. Many people consider this not only to be the first blow in bringing down the Berlin Wall, but as a crucial moment in our shared European identity and a milestone along the path to the pan-European value system and unified continent officially embodied by the European Union.

This event is commemorated by the Freedom OperaGala. Nearly 1300 seats are placed around the stage in front of the Opera House to see this concert featuring four internationally recognized stars: Anja KAMPE, Piotr BECZAŁA and Ferruccio FURLANETTO as well as the brilliant Hungarian soprano, Andrea ROST.

The four stars are joined by young singers and conductors from several European nations. They perform arias of freedom and famous ensembles of the opera literature.

The programme includes pieces by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Erkel, Kodály, Lehár, Verdi and Wagner. Accompanying events can be enjoyed on the Sphinx Terrace: Donizetti's Il campanello (15.00) and Menotti's The Telephone (17.00).

Entry:  free.
