Hungarian State Opera Celebrates 130th Anniversary With Gala
The Hungarian State Opera House will celebrate the 130th anniversary of its opening with a gala evening on Sept. 27. The programme will begin by evoking the grand opening on this day in 1884, Szilveszter Ókovács, the Opera House’s director told a press conference.

In the show, Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife, Elisabeth (Sisi) will arrive in a carriage at the Opera House to be greeted by architect Miklos Ybl and composer Ferenc Erkel, as well as Prime Minister Kálmán Tisza, politicians of the time and the public. At the gala evening’s programme the Overture from Erkel’s opera Hunyadi Laszlo Act II with Legends from his other opera Bank Ban will be performed.

Marking the 130th anniversary a new documentary presenting the history of the Opera House will be shown and a book released.

The State Opera House, a landmark neo-Renaissance building on Andrássy Avenue, was designed by Ybl and built in 1875-1884.

The richly decorated interiors were made by renowned Hungarian painters such as Mór Than, Károly Lotz and Bertalán Székely.
