Poll: Major Victory Of Ruling Parties Expected On Sunday In Hungary
Incumbent Budapest mayor István Tarlós is well ahead in the polls and the governing Fidesz-Christian Democrats will retain a majority in the Budapest municipal assembly after Sunday’s local elections, according to an analysis by the Nézőpont Institute. The governing parties are also expected to keep their hold on the majority of town councils, the analysis published on Tuesday said.

While Nyiregyháza (E) and Salgótarján (N) are swing cities, they are likely to be chalked up on the right of the political divide. Miskolc in the north-east is likely to face the biggest standoff in the elections, with a three-way tie between Fidesz, the leftist parties and radical nationalist Jobbik, the report said.

The only city slated to bring an opposition victory is Szeged, in the south. Jobbik is likely to have the second largest presence in county municipal assemblies in seven out of 19 counties.

The leftist opposition is unlikely to turn things around in the capital even in “the worst-case scenario”. Fidesz is seen winning 14 out of Budapest’s 23 districts and three more mandates are expected to go to the par ty via compensation lists.
